Claude's Ordeal: Some Truths
(Published with permission from Mr. Rey Fuentivilla)
Claude is the third child born to Rey and Nora Fuentivilla on May 23, 2004. After his birth at Iloilo Mission Hospital he was diagnosed to be suffering from a complex CYANOTIC HEART DISEASE ( CHD ), not a very ordinary cardiac condition. In Claude's case, then, it meant that his heart has a single valve (single atrium, single ventricle, single atrio-ventricular valve.) For this reason his pedia-cardiologist pronounced that he would only be living for a maximum of six months. However, due to some miracle which Rey and Nora saw as God's intervention, some small veins serving as passage of blood going to his lungs grew and has become the reason of his survival. Now, although Claude is 2 years and 5 months old, he still can't walk and talk all due to his condition.
When Claude was 2 months old he was hospitalized due to pneumonia as such because he was not given any immunizations after birth since the pedia's opinion about his lifespan. He survived this ordeal. Then when he was 10 months old he, again, was hospitalized due to pneumonia and meningitis. All the while, Rey and Nora though that it was the end of his life but then again he survived.
During the 2 years of his life, Claude has been in and out of the hospital in Iloilo and basically Rey and Nora's resources have already been depleted. Nora, a public school teacher, resorted to borrowing from a lending agency and, as an effect, she won't be getting any monthly salary for the next two years or until such time that loan has been paid. Rey, on the other hand, had just retired from his previous employer Metro Drug Inc after 13 years of loyalty and service. However, since he only worked for 13 years and because of his previous cash advances everytime Claude was hospitalized, he only got a small sum for his retirement pay. Currently, he is working for St. Mary's Publishing Corp., owned and managed by Mr. Val Jovero, Rey's classmate at VHS (Batch '91).
Rey and Nora's eldest daughter is 11 years old now in Grade 6; the second is 6; then Claude Wayne. Come November 2006 is the biggest test of everything that they have been sacrificing for for the last two years: Claude's precious life. It's the biggest test since the first operation at the Philippine Heart Center would involve a more complex series of procedures due to his complex case and would require a budget of 400,000 PhP.
They have continuously stormed heaven with their prayers and sacrifices... They continue to hold on to St. Vincent's Divine Providence clasping their hands in prayer until such time when Claude Wayne will enjoy his life in it's fullness
