Claude's Ordeal: Some Truths

(Published with permission from Mr. Rey Fuentivilla)

Claude is the third child born to Rey and Nora Fuentivilla on May 23, 2004. After his birth at Iloilo Mission Hospital he was diagnosed to be suffering from a complex CYANOTIC HEART DISEASE ( CHD ), not a very ordinary cardiac condition. In Claude's case, then, it meant that his heart has a single valve (single atrium, single ventricle, single atrio-ventricular valve.) For this reason his pedia-cardiologist pronounced that he would only be living for a maximum of six months. However, due to some miracle which Rey and Nora saw as God's intervention, some small veins serving as passage of blood going to his lungs grew and has become the reason of his survival. Now, although Claude is 2 years and 5 months old, he still can't walk and talk all due to his condition.

When Claude was 2 months old he was hospitalized due to pneumonia as such because he was not given any immunizations after birth since the pedia's opinion about his lifespan. He survived this ordeal. Then when he was 10 months old he, again, was hospitalized due to pneumonia and meningitis. All the while, Rey and Nora though that it was the end of his life but then again he survived.

During the 2 years of his life, Claude has been in and out of the hospital in Iloilo and basically Rey and Nora's resources have already been depleted. Nora, a public school teacher, resorted to borrowing from a lending agency and, as an effect, she won't be getting any monthly salary for the next two years or until such time that loan has been paid. Rey, on the other hand, had just retired from his previous employer Metro Drug Inc after 13 years of loyalty and service. However, since he only worked for 13 years and because of his previous cash advances everytime Claude was hospitalized, he only got a small sum for his retirement pay. Currently, he is working for St. Mary's Publishing Corp., owned and managed by Mr. Val Jovero, Rey's classmate at VHS (Batch '91).

Rey and Nora's eldest daughter is 11 years old now in Grade 6; the second is 6; then Claude Wayne. Come November 2006 is the biggest test of everything that they have been sacrificing for for the last two years: Claude's precious life. It's the biggest test since the first operation at the Philippine Heart Center would involve a more complex series of procedures due to his complex case and would require a budget of 400,000 PhP.

They have continuously stormed heaven with their prayers and sacrifices... They continue to hold on to St. Vincent's Divine Providence clasping their hands in prayer until such time when Claude Wayne will enjoy his life in it's fullness

CHILD WATCH: Bantay-Bata 163

bblogo

Dear Alex et al:

Could you please give me the email address of Mr. Rey Fuentivilla or give him my email address so we could start corresponding. Bantay Bata do have its medical assistance, we could provide on the child's medical needs specially on his medicines but not the hospital bill and professional fee of the doctor/s, however, we could arrange for him a referral to PCSO because I have batchmates who works inside. If you could also convince Mr. Rey to make an appeal on the National TV via The Filipino Channel (TFC) so we could get funds from donors to fund his child's medical needs. Do they have a place to stay here in Manila?

Kuya Alex, musta ka na, how's your baby and wife? Padre Kiko...saw from the trail of this email Fr. Ed Jocson's name, is he an ex- Vincentian? is if he is, could I have his email address, I've been meaning to contact him. I will wait for your friends' email.

Dear Mr. Fuentivilla:

I am May Iranta, better half of Roy. I've just received today trails of emails from your SVS-VHS group specifically from my hubby, alex and el kiko. I am working here in Bantay Bata 163 and we have in our program, the medical assistance for children between 0-12 years old. We also have a Bantay Bata branch in Iloilo located in the ABS-CBN Regional Station in Jaro. One of our staff who is working with us is an ex-vincentian too, Elly Aliliran, perhaps you could get in touch with him at (003)320-7423. Or you could give a call to Grace Solinap our OIC in BB Iloilo if you have any clarfications on our medical requirements listed below.

We would want to help Claude in his medicines and laboratory exams. We will refer you to the Social Service Department of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to help augment for the hospital bills that you will incur.

Treatment for CHD is very expensive and our medical assistance has also its limit. However, if you wish to air the story of Claude over National TV, we could probably raise funds for him and somehow cover his medical needs.

In order for us to further assess and facilitate the help that we can possibly provide the patient, we would require submission of the following documents, as soon as you arrive here in Manila.

(1) Medical Abstract / Certificate
(2) Medical Social Service Referral
(3) DSWD Referral
(4) Barangay Certificate
(5) Picture of the patient
(6) Prescriptions of the medicines needed (latest is 1 week period)

You can visit Bantay Bata 163 located at Mother Ignacia St. Quezon City or you can call me at 415-6309 or 0917-8554920. Schedule of receiving patients seeking medical assistance: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:00am to 12 nn only.

Thank you very much.

May

Brothers and Sisters,

They say that disaster, calamity, and catastrophic illness hits one harder when it hits closer to home. I spoke last night with Rey Fuentivilla and here is the scenario. His 2 years and 4 months old son has a defective heart valve and will undergo staged surgeries. He has developmental delay such as inability to walk related to his condition. He is weak, short of breath and cyanotic (bluish) in his lower extremeties. This is typical of congestive heart failure.

They will be arriving in Manila on 11/4/06 and will have the 1st of a series of heart surgeries on 11/6/06. Cost will be about 400,000.00 pesos. The ACM group in the Philippines is doing their part also. They have asked for voluntary contributions from members, they will also be selling items to raise funds for this cause. An ACM member in China is putting up a blog site to chronicle the events and progress.

I would like to appeal for your financial support and prayers for Rey and his family as they go through this catastrophic ordeal. I hope and pray that this does not happen to any of us. St. Irenaeus said that "the glory of God is the human person fully alive."

On behalf of Rey, thank you in advance for your financial and spiritual support.

Dale Almenario
Chairman Special Relief Committee

Dear Fr. Ed "Cohiba" E. & Mr. Billy "with the lovely wife Beth" T.,

While my greetings will surely pale alongside such luminaries as Fr. Roland & Fr. Greg, I'd like to sincerely extend my congratulations to both of you for joining the interim board team of Joebalt, Boy, Manny, Fr. Ed J., Gem & Fr. Kiks and I'm confident that with your assistance you will forge the VAI into a serious charitable organization for the poor and the needy.

We've been concerned about the situation of angel Claude Wayne and I've asked my brother Michael to get in touch with a close friend and very prominent surgeon in Manila who hopefully may be able to provide or coordinate services together with Ate May & Bantay Bata and the PCSO.

I'll apprise you of possible developments but in any event I should be in Manila in a couple weeks and will try to get in touch with Fr. Greg regarding our own small contribution.

God bless & with warmest regards to all,
Joe Arteche

It All Started with...

An Appeal for Claude Wayne S. Fuentivilla

To All ACM-VAI Brothers:

May the grace and peace be yours in full measure!

The anxiety and stress that we are now suffering is immeasurable. And it makes us sad to think of the condition of our child struggling to survive. Our son Claude Wayne S. Fuentivilla has a complex congenital heart disease. The physicians predicted that he will live only up to six months the most, but through God’s mercy, until now he is still alive and two years and 4 months old already. Last April 2005, he was hospitalized for three weeks at Iloilo St. Paul’s Hospital due to pneumonia and meningitis. We thought it was the end of his borrowed life here on earth. But God is indeed a Merciful and Loving God!

Due to his critical condition our physician advised us for an immediate operation in Manila preferably at Philippine Heart Center and is requiring us to prepare a reasonable budget close to Four Hundred Thousand Pesos (P400,000) for the first operation. Since his case is not the usual and ordinary congenital problem he is required to undergo various heart surgeries.

In this regard, we are appealing to your generosity to help us extend the life of our son through your financial assistance. As parents it is beyond one’s understanding that we will do everything just to let our child live whatever ways and means it takes even if it will be of immense burden and will result to ridiculous comments on our part.

The schedule for his operation will be this November 2006 since the attending surgeon is now in the States. He will be back last week of October here in Manila.

Again, We are humbly begging from you whatever help you can extend to help us in this very depressing stage of our life. We know you can understand our feelings because you too are parents and guardians.

We do hope for your love and compassion.

With Our Sincerest Gratitude,
Reynaldo and Nora Fuentivilla
